The First 3-D Image of a Mandelbrot Fractal Is Stunning

Here's a video of a deep zoom into the Mandelbulb with full parallax/perspective.

Behold the "Mandelbulb." This is a three-dimensional image created using the Mandelbrot set, a mathematical structure whose edges form fractals. The result is something that looks like an alien tree. Which isn't surprising, since fractals emulate patterns in nature.
this is the "first true three-dimensional representations of the Mandelbrot set." It was created by computer programmer Daniel White from Bedford, UK.

The original Mandelbrot is an amazing object that has captured the public's imagination for 30 years
It's known as a 'fractal' - a type of shape that yields (sometimes elaborate) detail forever, no matter how far you 'zoom' into it
It's found by following a relatively simple math formula. But in the end, it's still only 2D and flat - there's no depth, shadows, perspective, or light sourcing. What we have featured in this article is a potential 3D version of the same fractal.
Gotta love the luminous sorbet style texture of the quadratic version of the Mandelbulb

World's oldest plant is 13,000-year-old oak that survives by cloning itself

The oak is made up of a community of cloned bushes and scientists believe it has managed to survive the extreme effects of climate change by regenerating.

Jurupa Oak

This species of trees usually occur in cooler and wetter regions.
The strange location of the Jurupa was the first clue for the team that
it might have unusual origins.

The team also discovered that the oak didn't produce any fertile acorns, suggesting an unconventional form of growth.

Jurupa Oak

Clonal growth occurs after a fire, when resprouts form
around the base of burned stems. Over time, wood in the centre
degrades, and new resprouts form after additional fires, leaving behind
the haphazard collection of stems visible today.

Because no new stems
arise from acorns, the organism can only have achieved its current
size - more than 25 yards long - through this method of resprouting.

This literally appears to be a last living remnant of a vanished woody
vegetation that occupied the inland valleys at the height of the Ice
Age

Tape Measure Wizard

Seriously, this guy is amazing with a tape measure. We may not want him as the guy to rebuild our entertainment room, but for birthdays and Bar Mitzvahs? He's f-ing hired.

Mindblowing Ice Sculputes and the World's Largest Father Christmas - 25th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival: China (11 photos)

It's like China's version of Disneyland on Ice. These impressive ice sculptures are part of a display for the upcoming Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival. As well as the colorful life-sized ice buildings, which reflect traditional Chinese architecture, there is also a 160m (524ft) high Father Christmas sculpture, said by organizers to be the world's largest. The Festival, established in 1985, is held annually from January 5 and lasts for over one month. An estimated 800,000 tourists, 90 percent of them Chinese, are expected to visit the ice festival, said Jia Yan, director of the local tourism bureau.

This is an awe inspiring event every year!
