Top 16 American architectural wonders just down the road

Your neighbors may have strange habits, or an ugly fountain in front of their house, but they’re nothing compared to some of the strangest of America’s homes. From a 65-foot elephant house to the Leaning Tower of Pisa relocated to northern Illinois, Americans have a knack for a knack for absurd home design.

Originally a real estate promotion, “Lucy the Elephant” of New Jersey has served as a summer home, tavern, hotel, and tourist attraction.

Built as a covering for the water tank of a pool, the half-size replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa sits mere meters away from a major boulevard just northwest of Chicago.

Solomon’s Castle is the 10,000 square foot personal residence of Howard Solomon. The catch? It’s built almost entirely of recycled objects. Currently on the market with an asking price of $5 million.
